Newborn portraits are a wonderful way to capture those precious early moments of your baby’s life. However, as a new parent, you may be wondering when is the best time to schedule a newborn portrait session.
The ideal time to take newborn portraits is within the first two weeks of your baby’s life (under 14 days old). This is when your baby is still sleepy (sleeping for around 2 hours at a time) and easily moldable (those super cute wrapped images you see on my page). Additionally, newborns are less likely to develop baby acne or other skin irritations during this time.

Another reason why the first two weeks are the best time to take newborn portraits is that babies tend to be more settled and content during this period. They are still adjusting to their new environment and are more likely to sleep for longer periods of time. This makes it easier to capture those peaceful, dreamy photos that many parents cherish. After the two week mark, they are sleeping less, easily startled and the baby acne starts.
Furthermore, newborns change quickly, and this is especially true during the first few weeks of life. Their features are constantly developing, and they grow and change rapidly. By scheduling a portrait session within the first two weeks, you can capture those early moments and memories that you can cherish forever.

It is important to note that while the first two weeks are ideal, it is still possible to take beautiful portraits of your baby at any time during their first few months of life. However, after the first two weeks, babies tend to be more awake and alert, making it harder to pose them for photos. Additionally, as they grow, their personalities begin to emerge, which can make for some wonderful candid shots. This is why I suggest a 3 month mommy and me session. This is when they start being able to see up close. And a 6/7 month sitter session. I love this stage.
In conclusion, the best time to take newborn portraits is within the first two weeks of your baby’s life. However, if you miss this window, it is still possible to capture beautiful photos of your baby at any time during their first few months of life.
