Why We Talk Before We Ever Pick Up a Camera

Most photographers will book your session, send you a questionnaire and meet you at your session date.

I don’t do that.

Before I ever pick up my camera, I want to know all about you and your family.

Not your Instagram aesthetic. Not your favorite filter. You and why you want to do this session. What you want from this session.

I want to know that your oldest is going through a phase where she refuses to smile on command — but if you whisper something silly in her ear, she loses it every time. I want to know that your husband is a good sport but genuinely hates being the center of attention. I want to know that your youngest just got his first loose tooth and he cannot stop wiggling it.

Those details? That’s where the magic lives.

Family with their toddler on a bench in Katy TX

Here’s what I’ve learned after 17 years of capturing family photography in the Woodlands TX.

A beautiful location doesn’t make a beautiful portrait. Perfect outfits don’t either. What makes a portrait stop you in your tracks — what makes you catch your breath when you see it — is connection.

And connection doesn’t happen by accident.

It’s built. Intentionally. Before we ever step foot on location.

Our consultation isn’t a formality.

It’s where I learn what “us” looks like for your family. Whether you’re relaxed and rowdy or quiet and close. Whether your kids need movement and adventure to open up, or whether they warm up slowly and need a gentler approach.

It’s where I ask about the dogs. The grandparents. The fact that you have a special needs child who does better in quieter spaces — and I already have the perfect location in mind.

It’s where I stop being your photographer and start becoming someone your kids will actually be excited to see on session day.

I also use this time to take something off your plate entirely.

You will not leave our consultation with a to-do list. No “figure out your outfits and send me a Pinterest board.” No vague instructions that send you down a rabbit hole on a Sunday afternoon.

You’ll leave knowing exactly what to wear, where we’re going, what to expect, and how long we’ll be there.

Because you’re already managing a career, a household, a school calendar, and approximately four thousand other things.

The last thing you need is one more project.

That’s the difference between a photographer and a full-service experience.

Anyone can show up and take pictures.

I show up already knowing your family. Already knowing that your daughter’s nervous tell is pulling at her sleeve. Already knowing to give your son five minutes to just run before I ask anything of him.

That doesn’t happen on session day.

It happens in the conversation before.

So if you’ve ever walked away from a session feeling like the photos were fine but didn’t quite feel like you — I’d be willing to bet that conversation never happened.

It should have.

It always happens here.

Ready to start with a real conversation? I’d love to hear about your family.

What a Session with Kara Is Really Like

From start to finish, my sessions are relaxed, guided, and designed to feel easy — even if you’ve never been in front of a camera before.
