Thinking about booking a photo session but not sure if you need a mini or full session?
At Kara Powell Photos, mini photo shoot sessions are perfect for quick updates like Santa photoshoots or mommy and me photo sessions.
If you’re looking for a full session, we offer custom locations, more time, and beautiful galleries—ideal for Houston newborn photography, maternity portraits, and senior photo shoots.
Not sure which to choose? When it comes to booking a photo session, one of the most common questions we hear is: “Do I need a mini session or a full session?”
We get it—life is busy, and sometimes you just want a few great images without spending hours in front of the camera.
But here’s the thing: not all sessions are created equal.
Let’s break it down.

What Is a Mini Photo Session?
Mini-sessions are short, sweet, and very specific. Ours typically last about 20 minutes, are held during the week at a designated location near our studio, and are perfect for things like:
- Mommy and me photoshoots
- Senior boys who only need a handful of great shots
- Santa photoshoots during the holiday season
- Seasonal setups like spring mini sessions
Because of the time limit, you’ll receive a small gallery of around 15-20 images.
These are great if you’re looking for something simple and fast—just note that they’re not ideal for extended family photos, small children who need time to warm up, or more complex setups.
Important: We only offer mini sessions a few times a year—typically for Santa photos and the occasional spring promo.

What Is a Full Session?
Full sessions are the gold standard of what we do. They are fully customized to your family, your goals, and your style.
We help you choose your
- Custom location
- Preferred time and day
- Theme for the session
Bring your ideas for unique photos—we’ll do a consultation and create something that’s totally you!
A full session allows for more time to capture personality, warmth, and candid moments—especially helpful for families with young kids.
Whether you’re looking for a mommy and me photo session, houston newborn photographer, or even houston extended family photographer, a full session gives you the flexibility and depth to create something meaningful.
Wondering what are senior pictures supposed to include? Full sessions are ideal! You can bring outfit changes, multiple senior photo props like your car or dog, and choose locations that reflect your personality.

The Real Difference
Here’s the biggest takeaway: If you’re hoping for just “one or two good pictures,” you might be disappointed with a mini session—especially if kids are involved.
Most children (and adults!) take a few minutes to get comfortable in front of the camera.
The magic usually happens after that warm-up phase—and that’s what full sessions are designed for.
Plus, with a full session, your images are fully edited, and your gallery is usually well over 75 images.
You also have the freedom to choose wall art, albums, or simply the digitals you love most. And our turnaround? Super fast—usually within a few days, not weeks.

So Which Photo Session Should You Choose?
Ask yourself:
- Do I want a quick update or a meaningful collection?
- Am I booking a family Christmas photographer or something more spontaneous?
- Do I need flexibility, outfit changes, or multiple backdrops like you’d expect in studio photography near me?
- Is this for a milestone like extended family, senior year, or welcoming a new baby?
Still have questions about full vs. mini sessions?
Mini photo sessions are quick, affordable photo shoots—ideal for Santa, spring, or senior photos—while full photography sessions are custom, in-depth experiences designed to capture emotion, connection, and personality.
If you’re looking for more time, flexibility, and a larger gallery, a full session is the way to go.
