Photo Tips – Light

We are continuing our series to help you get better images when you are taking photographs. Here are the only 5 things you need to know to get better images…

  1. Exposure
  2. Light
  3. Perspective
  4. Focus
  5. Composition

Today we’re talking about Lighting.

First, the golden hour. We have talked about this in the past, but it truly is one of the number one most important things to think about. The golden hours are Sunrise and Sunset. If you’re shooting at these times, you pretty much can’t go wrong light wise. The light at these times is warmer looking and much softer than other times of day. You can find out when the golden hour is wherever you are by checking a weather app or googling “golden hour times”.

Second, is the light meter within your camera. If you are shooting in manual you will see your light meter below the image in the viewfinder. We find that we prefer to shoot just a little over exposed. This gives our images a bit of an airy, light feel. But this is something that is personal and you can decide for yourself how you like to expose your images.

Third, is the subject. Sometimes a subject calls for darker, lighter, or more dramatic light. If that is the case you can use extra lights to help achieve the effect you are looking for, or you can do some post processing work to create the feel you are looking for. You can also choose different times of day or different locations to give the look you are going for.
