I hear it almost every time.
Right before a session. Sometimes in the parking lot. Sometimes in a text the morning of.
“I just want to warn you — my kids are being so difficult today.”
And every single time, I smile.
Because what you just described? That’s my favorite kind of session.
Let me tell you what I’ve learned after 17 years of photographing families in The Woodlands.
The kids who refuse to sit still give me the best candid shots of the entire session. The toddler who throws himself on the ground in protest? He’s about to look up at his mom with the most heartbreaking, beautiful expression you’ve ever seen. The teenager who shows up with her arms crossed and her earbuds in? Twenty minutes in, she’s laughing at something her little brother did and she has no idea I captured it.
The “difficult” kids are the ones who show me who they really are.
And that’s exactly what I’m here for.
Here’s what I need you to understand before you ever step foot in front of my camera.
I am not here for perfect.
I have two degrees in education. I spent years learning how children think, how they move, how they process the world around them. I didn’t just stumble into photographing families — I was built for it. Patient to my core. Unhurried by nature. I genuinely love the chaos.
I call it directed chaos.
You bring the wild. I’ll bring the plan.
What actually happens during a session with us isn’t what you’re imagining.
There are no stiff poses on a blanket. No “everyone look at the camera and smile” moments that make your husband’s eye twitch. No photographer tapping her foot while your youngest melts down over a bug he found on the ground.
We let kids be kids. We follow their lead. We build in time to explore, to run, to just be.
And somewhere in the middle of all of that — I get the shot.
The real one. The one that stops you in your tracks at your viewing appointment.
Not because everyone was perfectly still.
Because everyone was perfectly themselves.
I think about a session I did last fall. Two boys — full of energy, zero interest in photos. Mom texted me that morning convinced it was going to be a disaster.
By the end of the session those boys were racing each other through the trees, tackled their dad to the ground, and sat quietly for about forty-five seconds while their mom held them both.
That forty-five seconds?
It’s hanging on their wall right now.
