The Whole Family, All in One Frame: Extended Family Sessions in The Woodlands

There’s a photograph of my own family that I’d trade almost anything for. It’s the one that doesn’t exist: all of us together, the grandparents, the cousins, everyone, on a day when nothing special was happening.

After 17 years of photographing families, I can tell you that nearly every family has a gap like that. Everyone means to do it “when the timing works out,” and then the kids are teenagers, and a grandparent isn’t as steady on their feet, and the cousin who lived nearby has moved to another state.

Extended family sessions are how we close that gap.

What an Extended Family Session Is

An extended family session is a full, custom session for the whole family: grandparents, parents, adult children, grandchildren, and sometimes aunts, uncles, and cousins. It’s still unhurried and on location, and it’s still about real moments instead of stiff lineups.

I only photograph on location, and for larger families that makes all the difference. Out in the open there’s room for everyone to spread out, move, and breathe. Here in The Woodlands, we have tall pines, soft light through the canopy, and open spaces where a family of fifteen can look like a family instead of a crowd.

Why They’re Worth the Effort

I won’t pretend that gathering a big family is easy. Calendars clash, and someone is always traveling. But these are the sessions families tell me, years later, they’re most grateful they made time for.

They capture generations at once. Grandchildren leaning on a grandfather’s shoulder, three generations of hands in one frame, a grandmother laughing at something only her family would find funny. These photographs mean more with each passing year.

They become the heart of your wall art. A multigenerational portrait is the kind of piece that gets passed down. It hangs in the entryway for decades, and then one day it hangs in your children’s homes.

They give everyone a reason to be together. The session itself often becomes the memory. I’ve watched families who hadn’t been in the same place for a year spend the afternoon laughing, teasing each other, and simply enjoying one another.

How I Make a Big Group Feel Easy

The biggest worry I hear from families is that it will be chaos. Fifteen people, three toddlers, one teenager who “doesn’t do photos.” I understand.

Here’s how I approach it:

  • We talk first. Every session begins with a conversation, so I understand your family: who’s coming, who needs a little extra ease, what matters most to you, and where the photographs will live in your home.
  • We plan for comfort. I’ll help you think through timing, location, and what everyone wears, so no one feels over- or under-dressed. Styling guidance is part of the experience.
  • We move. I don’t line people up and count to three. We walk, we sit close, and we let the little ones wander back to Grandma. The genuine moments come in the in-between, and that’s where I do my best work.
  • We photograph in smaller groupings too. Besides the full-family portrait, we’ll capture each branch of the family, grandparents with grandchildren, siblings together, and the couples. That gives you a rich collection instead of a single frame.

Choosing the Right Time and Place

Fall in The Woodlands is lovely for extended family sessions. The light turns golden, the temperatures finally become kind to grandparents and little ones alike, and the whole family is more likely to be in town around the holidays. It’s also a smart time to plan ahead, since larger gatherings take coordination and my fall calendar fills early.

For location, we’ll choose somewhere with room to spread out and a setting that feels like your family, whether that’s a wooded trail, a quiet waterfront spot, or a place that holds meaning for you. Many of my clients in Carlton Woods, Woodforest, and East Shore love the privacy of a session close to home; maybe even at your own home.

An extended family session is part of a larger process, and it doesn’t end when the session does. We begin with a conversation. After the session comes a reveal, where you see your images and we choose the portraits that will become your wall art. Digitals, styling guidance, and legacy planning are all included, because the goal is for your photographs to live in your home, not on a hard drive.

If You’ve Been Waiting for the Right Moment

This is your sign. The right moment is rarely the perfect one. It’s the one where everyone you love can be in the same place.

If you’d like to gather your family for a session this season, I’d love to hear about them. Reach out through the contact page and we’ll start with a conversation about your people, your story, and what you want to hold onto.
