Every October, my inbox fills with the same question in different words: Can we just do something quick?
I understand the instinct. Fall in The Woodlands is a busy season of football Fridays, school events, and holiday cards that seem to sneak up by Halloween. A short, squeezed-in session sounds like the easy answer. And if you have kids – I get it. You think that 15 minutes is better for them.
After 17 years behind the camera, here is my honest take: the photographs you’ll treasure rarely happen in ten-fifteen minutes.
The First Few Minutes Are Just the Warm-Up
Nobody walks onto location ready to be photographed. Kids are wondering what’s expected of them. Parents are checking each other’s collars. Everyone is a little stiff, a little self-conscious.
The real moments come after that, when your youngest gets bored of “cheese” and starts telling me about her week, when your husband cracks the joke he always cracks, when your teenager forgets to be too cool for this. That’s the laugh you’ll want on your wall in twenty years.
A full session gives us room to get past the posing and into the connection. You can’t rush that, and I’d never want to try.

Fall Light Deserves Time
The light here in autumn is something special. As the sun drops, it filters through the pines and turns everything warm and golden, and the shade becomes soft and flattering. Late in the season, the cypress trees near the water take on their rust and copper tones.
A full session lets us move with that light: starting in one spot, drifting to another as the sun shifts, and catching the glow at its best. Whether we’re in your Carlton Woods backyard, along the water at East Shore, or somewhere in the Heights that means something to your family, we have time to let the setting work for us instead of racing it.
Time also allows for breaks for snacks, tantrums and playing. Don’t you want your images to look natural. Not forced? I like to let my smallest clients guide the session. So if they need a tiny break; we will be taking one.
More Variety, More Real Life
With room to breathe, a full session gives you a true collection instead of a handful of similar frames. We can capture:
- The whole family together, and each smaller grouping within it
- Siblings just being siblings
- Quiet portraits of each child
- Parents together
- Parents with each child
- Candid, in-between moments that tell the story of who you are right now. Typically well planned before hand with a prop you bring like a book or blanket.
That range is what makes a gallery feel like your family rather than a single pose repeated. And allows for a beautiful album.

Made to Be Lived With
I don’t believe portraits belong only on a phone or a hard drive. Every session includes a styling consultation beforehand, so you’re comfortable and confident in what you’re wearing and how it will look in your home. We also plan your legacy and wall art from the start, so the images you choose become heirloom pieces with a place to hang. Your digital images are included as well.
That kind of thoughtful, start-to-finish planning is only possible when the session itself is unhurried. It’s the difference between collecting photos and creating something lasting.
The Season Moves Quickly
If you’re dreaming of fall portraits, the best advice I can give is to reach out early. Golden-hour evenings in The Woodlands fill up fast between mid-October and Thanksgiving, and I take a limited number of families each season so that every session gets my full attention.
If you’d like to talk through timing, location, or what to wear, I’d love to hear from you. Let’s set aside an evening, walk into that golden light, and make something your family will still be looking at for generations.
