We are continuing our series to help you get better images when you are taking photographs. Here are the only 5 things you need to know to get better images…
- Exposure
- Light
- Perspective
- Focus
- Composition
Today we’re talking about focus. What is focus? In photography, it’s practically married to sharpness. An image that is completely sharp at the point in which you intend to focus is said to be in-focus. An image that’s completely blurry is said to be unfocused.
You can focus on different things within your image, or you can change the aperture to get a larger or smaller depth of field. Either option presents you with a number of creative options that will help you draw attention to the most important parts of your image. Keep the depth of field small for closeups of your friends and large when you’re doing big open landscapes. It’s a simple rule that will give you some great results.
Another fun thing to play with is where you choose to place the focus in your image. One of the most common ways we have probably all seen this is in wedding or engagement photos where the bride is holding her hand out with the ring in focus and the couple is out of focus behind it. This idea can be adapted to fit all different types of photography and subjects, like the photo below.
