FAQ
Where is your studio located?
Kara Powell Photography is located in The Woodlands, TX. Near our studio we have a large park that allows for lots of room for kids and dogs to run, hide behind trees and great locations for outdoor images. If you would like to come by to check out our images and products, give us a call!
Where will we hold the session? Do I come to your studio? What are some good locations?
I have a huge list of go-to locations in the Houston/Woodlands area that I love and that the light is amazing at. And of course, my favorite sessions are those held right in your own home, where everyone is comfortable and relaxed. Once your session is booked, I will set up a consultation, so you can tell me what kind of feel you want your images to have or let me know which images speak most to you on my website. From there, we can determine the best location for your session.
Do some locations cost more?
Some locations will require a travel fee, as they are farther away for me to travel. So it will always be cheaper for you to do locations in or around The Woodlands area. Some locations also may require permits. I will let you know which locations these are before you select a location.
How long does this process take?
If you are looking for an immediate session, the process for a custom portrait session can take around a month, depending on your schedule and my workload. While it may seem like an investment of time, the end results are well worth it! Here’s a timeline for a typical session:
Week 1 – booking, planning, and getting ready for the session
Week 2 – the session itself
Week 3-4 – you’ll receive a phone call from me telling you that your photos are ready to view at the studio. You will come and make your selections at the design consultation.
1-4 weeks after your viewing, your final order will arrive and I will either ship it to you or you can come pick it up.
What should I/we wear to the session? How can I pick the right clothing?
I do a consultation with every one of my clients before their session, during which we will discuss clothing options. We offer styling services to those who would like a little more help. We also have a few posts on our blog with clothing options and suggestions.
Do you have props or sets that we can use?
Yes! We always encourage you to include props that are special to you and your family. If you have a blanket that has been passed down to you through the generations, let’s use it! Or if your family is really into sports, let us know and we’ll craft a custom session to feature your interests! We want to incorporate things that mean something to you. Your images will mean so much more to you! For family/children’s sessions we do sometimes have props depending on the theme. If you have an idea, let us know! We love making dream sessions a reality.
I’m nervous about dealing with the digital files. Will you tell me how to print them and where to go to get prints made?
Our goal is for you to never have to deal with printing digital files. While they are available, we print all of your custom products for you. If there is something you would like to print yourself, your images come with very simple instructions on how to do that along with recommendations of where we suggest printing your files.
What is the difference between Low Res and High Res digital images?
Great question! Low Res images will print up to a 5×7, maybe an 8×10 depending on the file. They’re great for small prints, sharing online and commemorating the occasion. High Res images are the full resolution images and you can use them for almost anything! These are great for archival purposes, provided they are properly stored.
Do you do custom products?
Yes! All of our products are custom. Each of our packages include a product credit so that you can choose exactly what makes sense for your home and family. We offer a variety of custom products such as announcements, albums, canvases and heirloom boxes. When you come in for your viewing appointment we will discuss design options.
Are there session fees?
No, our sessions do not require a session fee, however we do require prepayment of our $700 package to reserve your session. This can be split into multiple payments due before your session if you would prefer. Once you view your images you can decide which package fits your needs best.
What are your prices?
Packages with digital images and products start at $700. Once you see your images you will have the opportunity to choose the art pieces that best suit your family and your home. We always encourage you to come into the studio to do a consultation. This will allow me to show you our custom products, slideshows of our images, discuss your needs and how we can exceed your expectations. We believe that albums and wall art are the most important purchases. We find that these end up being the family heirlooms, enjoyed for years to come. I want my dog to participate but they are not well behaved off leash. How can we safely hold a session in an unfenced area?
Don’t worry! We never want to put your fur baby in an unsafe situation, so we always request that dogs stay on leash in unfenced areas. We can either choose a location that is fenced, such as your yard, or we can remove the leash after the fact. Below are a few samples of what it looks like to remove a leash.
